For parents, grandparents & caregivers

Everyday moments build language.

You don't need to be an educator to help your child build strong language. Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, foster and kinship caregivers: you're in the right place.

  • making reading activities at home a little more fun

Everyday language moments

Simple ways to build language at home

No special materials or technology needed. Just you, your child, and the day you already have.

Talk during routines

Name what you're doing at bath time, meals, and car rides. "You're pouring the milk. Pour, pour, all done!"

Tell stories in order

Use the words first, next, then, and last to talk about something you did together.

Share books

Talk about the pictures, not just the words. Ask, "What do you think happens next?"

Take turns talking

Pause, listen, and answer. Back-and-forth conversation is one of the best ways children learn language.

A story told in order

  1. FirstWe washed our hands.
  2. NextWe cut the apple.
  3. ThenWe shared it with Grandma.
  4. LastWe cleaned up together.
